I don't like people.
Just putting it out there... I don’t like people. They move. Talk. Have a mind of their own. And make me feel uncomfortable.
When I started dabbling with photography, I started with buildings. Because, buildings stay put. You can trust them to be there when the sun comes up, and when it goes ‘to bed’. Buildings are solid. And beautiful. I love mountains for pretty much the same reasons. I’m currently crushing on close-up flora and fauna. Even though the goddamn wind keeps blowing my shots to bits. Flowers sway, but don’t run away.
Anyways, back to people. Homo sapiens. I noticed I have very few shots of people. I’m not sure how the pros do it? Do they get lucky? Or orchestrate shots?
So I don’t like to photograph people, in general, but do live these (lucky) shots.
KHIVA, UZBEKISTAN | The kids I know play soccer or hide-and-seek, here they play war.
INLE LAKE, MYANMAR | Monks in a prayer session are so focussed the outside world does not exist. But I was bare foot, stept onto a rough pebble, may have said some obscene words a little too loud. I looked up. He looked down. CLICK. Got ya. And after study-time it’s playtime!
KARAKOL, KYRGYSTAN | In the middle of nowhere you find the most colorful people.
SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN | I tried to shoot the madrassa through this peephole, but she turned out far more interesting.
BAGAN, MYANMAR | She reminded me of Don Corleone, not sure why.
SOMEWHERE IN THE BUSH, MYANMAR | While his friends where trying to sell necklaces to my travel companions, we were having a ‘crazy face’ competition.
KATHMANDU, NEPAL | We met these lovely ladies on our way down a little Nepalese mountain. They look serious, but were really nice. I emailed this photo to our guide, who wanted to print it and give it to them.
All the pictures above, I actually got people to look into my camera. In the Netherlands it’s quite simple to ask someone to look up, down, move aside, smile, turn around or whatever. And trust me, in every situation I’m not holding a camera, I have absolutely no problem telling people what to do. But with the lens… I kinda hide behind a tree and click.
OLYMPIC STADIUM, AMSTERDAM | Kid playing in the rain, me waiting for her to cycle into the little patch of sunshine. She stops at exactly the right spot. Click. BELOW. Same place. DE JEUGD VAN TEGENWOORDIG concert.
KENNERMERLAND, N-HOLLAND | My dad photographing a bird.
