Are we killing imagination, inventiveness and creativity?

I remember the time when no dress was save, I looked pretty and girly for about an hour before deciding to go fishing of build a tree hut.  Dress. Ruined.

Sunny or rainy, warm or cold – we were outside always. Chasing the ice cream truck, playing hide and seek. Or just hang and chat. I also remember my first computer and video game (Paperboy), and how it took seemingly hours to get internet started. The dial-in tune is engraved in my memory for ever. But internet time was limited, an hour after dinner for example, then back outside.

Geez, does the world look different today! My niece and nephew can’t seem to survive without an iPad or iPhone with YouTube. My niece stayed with me for a weekend once and watched Netflix for 60% of the time - while I was drawing, blowing bubbles and ruining my living room with glitter. I took her to the science museum, where she wanted to leave after an hour. Tried to decorate the sidewalk, and little miss bossy got me doing al the work. I even built a tent in the dining room for us to sleep in!

Are children today spoilt? Do they have too much toys? The playground near my house seems to illustrate this. A shit load of toys, abandoned. The playground looks like the saddest thing ever. And is this slowly killing their imagination, inventiveness and creativity? Are we raising a generation that can only be entertained by a digital screen? Time will tell.
